description

Private collection.

Canvas, oil.

A reddish-brown human hand and face are depicted against the backdrop of a desolate landscape. The objects floating in the air indicate Still’s fascination with Surrealism, as evidenced by the mysterious and deserted atmosphere characteristic of this art movement. The face similar to an ancient mask in the foreground and the totem pole on the right side of the picture indicate the artist’s interest in the art of primitive peoples. While living in the western United States, the artist was very interested in the customs and culture of the American Indians and often visited Indian reservations to paint portraits of residents and their way of life.
