Three colors. Red. Yellow. Blue

author

Alexander Rodchenko

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: private collection.

Briefly about the painting:

The triptych became a historical work for Rodchenko’s picturesque career – he completed it by three evenly painted canvases. It is believed that this composition is a continuation of the polemic with Malewicz’s “black square abyss”. It is no doubt true that he also embodied the rejection of the subject and any “spiritual content” of the image, concentrating the viewer’s attention on the line, shape, texture and color. However, according to Rodchenko, art does not go into non-existence (that is, into the “Black Square”), but simply ceases in academic and even some avant-garde senses. In catalogs in the West, the triptych is listed as “The Last Picture”. Rodchenko returned to easel art with few abstract compositions only after 20 years.
