Briefly about the painting:
The work created by the artist one year after the death of her husband who died of a stroke is one of the few surrealistic paintings by the artist, where a figure of a young woman is depicted. Sitting with her back to the viewer, she sees barren landscape, consisting of jagged forms, like the earth deeply cracked. It is quite probable that the author presented herself allegorically, realizing the prospect of the dark future from which the love of her life had gone. William Chadwick expanded the meaning of this painting, placing the image on the cover of his book “Women-Artists and Surrealism”. During the heyday of Surrealism, women were either given the role of muses, or were underestimated as painters, compared to their male colleagues. The canvas was sold by Sotheby’s London in 2014 for more than $ 7 million.
