The Metaphysical Muse

author

Carlo Carrà

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Pinacoteca Brera (Milan, Italy).

Carra’s late work is devoid of dynamics and filled with mysterious symbols. Influenced by the painting of de Chirico, the artist created metaphysical paintings in which everyday things have special meaning, and the combination of incongruous objects confuses the viewer. A mannequin of a tennis player with a huge head, a map of Greece with a target, a bright cone in the background – all this, placed in a cramped room, evokes mixed feelings of incomprehensibility and absurdity. The work is permeated with strong static energy, frozen silence, which cannot break a single sound or movement. The surrealistic images in Carra’s “Metaphysical Muse” directly influenced the aesthetics of Surrealists of the 1920s.
