The Last Day of Christ VI

author

Julian Schnabel

description

Mediums: ink on polyester.
Location: the Gagosian Gallery, New York (the USA).

The basis for the picture was X-ray photographs of the early 20th century, which the artist found in France while working on his film “The Suit and the Butterfly”. On the vast canvas made of polyester, Julian Schnabel accurately reproduced this image, being able to convey the fragility and vulnerability of the human body. Compared to the artist’s early paintings that were brighter and more detailed, this one attracts with its exquisite simplicity. It is associated with Christian themes characteristic of the artist’s style and gives associations with suffering and death but at the same time makes you think about the immortality of the human soul.
