The Inner Life (Nude and Spectral Still Life)

author

Victor Brauner

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York City (the USA).

Brauner was involved in Theosophy and Spiritism from childhood – his father organized sessions at home. The artist created two parallel forms – a solid external figure with two faces (one of them is with its eyes closed) and a spectral one, which probably means a soul or spirit of a graceful woman. A thin membrane connects them, and the spiritual form, or the so-called etheric body, is very similar to a flask of the finest glass and repeats the general outline of the physical body. Browner tried to visualize what theosophists and representatives of other esoteric movements of that time believed in.
