The painting, which inspired director Jack Hazen to create the eponymous film dedicated to the life of David Hockney, is the largest and most famous of the three works in the “Splash” series. The artist managed to amazingly accurately convey the atmosphere of the California heat and the calmness of the noon, which is violated by the person who jumped into the pool. The artist said that he “for two weeks depicted a moment that lasts only a few seconds”. The artist did not know who the swimmer was since he painted a picture from a photograph, the author of which remained unknown.
