Tête de femme

author

Amedeo Clemente Modigliani

description

Mediums: limestone.
Location: the Museum of Modern Art, G. Pompidou Center, Paris (France).

The work differs from other sculptures of the author by the general profile in the stone, which makes it look like a high relief. The cheekbones of the face do not seem to fit in a narrow block. This is also one of the few images where expressive and rather large lips smile sadly. The ancient Greek sculptors used this technique depicting kouros and kores. The face is not too elongated, but a very high headdress and a long, slender neck make the piece similar to a column. Modigliani, as his contemporaries say, conceived a “temple for humanity”, surrounded by hundreds of caryatids; but he failed to create it.
