Testa di Cariatide

author

Amedeo Clemente Modigliani

description

Mediums: limestone.
Location: private collection.

The work remained hidden in a private collection for 90 years. Although it was, according to the artist’s friends, after a short exhibition at the Salon D’Marne (Autumn Salon) shown at the workshop of Modigliani in Paris. Creating the sculpture, the Italian master was inspired by the geometric patterns of African sculpture and the task of general simplification of forms manifested in the works of his mentor C. Brancusi. Modigliani made about seventy drawings of caryatids. Their highly stylized manner shows the author’s interest in a wide variety of arts that are considered primitive. In 2010, the work was sold at Christie’s auction for 43.2 million euros.
