Amedeo Clemente Modigliani

description

Mediums: sandstone.
Location: private collection.

Returning to the origins was a strong creative impetus for Modigliani – he seemed to be united with the roots and traditions of different countries. In this statue, the elongated line was not embodied – on the contrary, there is a usual roundness of the face, in the center of which there are two almond-shaped eyes and a rather short nose. Above the low and round forehead, the mass of hair follows the same geometric essence, but the roughness of processing and the coarse mass of the ears contrast with the smoothness of the face. Perhaps the work was not completed, and these parts of the sculpture were not completely carved, but only outlined, and only the face was finally separated from the sandstone block.
