Still Life with a Blue Cup

author

Mario Sironi

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Gallery of Modern Art (Rovereto, Italy).

The artist created this still life after he started working in the style of novecento; it became a symbol of fundamental changes in his art. During that period, the artist adhered to the rule “against any repetition in painting”, which was proclaimed in a manifesto that he and his associates wrote in 1922. As before, the artist used a limited palette of colours, focusing on the blue cup in the center of the composition and plunging the background into a deep shadow. The author skillfully combined elements of modernist art and academic painting, creating an original mixture of classic and modern.
