Station in Milan

author

Carlo Carrà

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Art Gallery of Stuttgart (Germany).

This painting is associated with the famous film of the Lumiere brothers “Arrival of the train”. Its author strictly follows the commandments of Futurists depicting the rapid movement, urban bustle and the power of modern cars. This was one of Carra’s first attempts to depict the dynamics of the moment in his work, which he achieves thanks to energetic lines and contrasting colour combinations. Looking at the works of Carlo Carra, the viewer notices that the artist not only skillfully conveyed the speed of the train but also the sound of the noisy station and even the smell of smoke. People on the platform are depicted very schematically, like faceless shadows; they dissolve in a cloud of aggressive fire and smoke.
