Souvenir of Paris

author

Óscar Domínguez

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Reina Sofia Art Center (Madrid, Spain).

Briefly about the painting:

One of the first paintings by Oscar Dominguez, where he used the technique of automatic painting, depicting spontaneous objects and associations. He did not think at all about their meaning and interconnection. The Eiffel Tower, blurred on the background of the gray sky, a recognizable symbol of Paris, is in the upper part of the canvas; below, under the ground, there is a dark and slightly eerie metro tunnel, resembling a fantastic time funnel. This endless black hole creates an oppressive impression, reinforced by the disturbing shakiness of the human figure on the surface. At the same time, life inside the ground goes on: small bugs collect twigs and leaves and are completely unaware of what is happening in the human world.
