Snake Charmer

author

Victor Brauner

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York City (the USA).

Gradually, Victor Brauner began to leave his high surrealism and to draw more on paper surfaces and also used the encaustic technique on boards and other bases. Flattened figures appeared more and more often in works; sometimes their proportions were close to real, as is the case with the Snake Charmer, but became more abstract. In this painting, the background is obscure, the snake is very conditional, and the man is covered with so-called “dots” or “power segments” symbolizing various chakras. A golden-green frame indicates his aura – and this is also a snake.
