Sonia Delaunay

description

Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, Madrid (Spain).

Canvas, oil.

Delaunay’s career went far beyond the scope of visual art and included the design of interior design, clothing, fabrics and accessories. This canvas directly relates to her work as a designer of women’s dresses – her textiles under the brand name Casa Sonia became popular and sold all over the world, without losing their relevance to this day. The canvas depicts three faceless mannequin figures in different dresses. One consists of interwoven rows of blue and white triangles, the other is a geometric pattern of lines at right angles, and the third lady shows a black dress with a triple skirt that creates an uneven silhouette. Each figure is on its own background with different colour schemes. The author showed that art inspires fashion and the intersection between painting and design is not only random but necessary.
