The paired half-length portrait represents the author of the picture and his wife, Capitoline. The artist depicted himself with a brush and a small palette in his hands. The rich gamut with a combination of several shades of red and blue indicates the artist’s passion for Expressionism. The figures are expressively modelled; they occupy the entire space of the canvas. The warm relationship of the spouses is conveyed not only by their proximity in the painting but also by the gesture of a woman who put her hand on her husband’s shoulder.
