Self-portrait in glass

author

Mikhail Matyushin

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Museum of St. Petersburg avant-garde (Russia).

About the painting:

Matyushin developed organic direction in his art. According to his theory, crystals are live organisms; therefore, it is no wonder that he painted his self-portraits in this manner. The bright painting consisting of colorful lines organized in a long crystal does not immediately make it possible to examine facial features, but they are found in the places they are supposed to take. The work shows not imitation, but following several modern art movements – Cubism, Suprematism and color painting, which was actively developed by Olga Rozanova at that time.
