SE 71, The Tree, big blue sponge

author

Yves Klein

description

Mediums: pure pigment, synthetic resin on sponge and plaster.
Location: Center Pompidou, Paris (France).

Klein wrote about his sculptures made using natural materials, “While working in my studio, I sometimes used sponges. Of course, they quickly turned blue! Once I realized the beauty of the blue colour in the sponge – the instrument of work suddenly became a material. The sponge’s extraordinary ability to absorb seduced me.” Evenly and deeply penetrating impregnation and texture became the idea for creating a variety of objects, including a series of sculptures similar to trees. This monumental one and a half meter sculpture of the artist weighing about 60 kg is one of his last works.
