Sculptural composition

author

Naum Gabo

description

Mediums: steel profile, tubes and wire mesh.
Location: Coolsingel, City Center, Rotterdam (Netherlands).

According to Gabo, this three-dimensional structure is his “ideological contribution to Constructivism”. The idea is connected with the idea of integrating a sculpture into an architectural ensemble preserving the transparency of space, the impression of weightlessness in a large sculpture (its height is 26 m and its weight is 40 tons). The work dates from the period when abstract geometric designs were replaced by more organic ones, and Gabo explained that he was inspired by the structures he found in plants. The interweaving inside are roots holding blocks of black marble – the equivalent of the trunk, eight metal branches come out of it. They connect at the top, and the finer elements are foliage. According to the principles of Constructivism, the sculpture occupies the maximum area in space with minimal weight.
