Sculptor (self-portrait)

author

Sergey Konenkov

description

Mediums: wood.
Location: the S.T. Konenkova State Museum of Sculpture, Smolensk (Russia).

The self-portrait created a year before the 90th anniversary is unusual in terms of the technique – Konenkov used a large stump for a large sculpture – a trunk, roots, branches, and even knots. The symbolic image associated with a fairy-tale hero has enormous strained arms and mighty shoulders. Moreover, the sculptor has the look of a sage and a rebellious prophet. The sculpture was one of 40 works donated by the author to the sculpture museum in Smolensk organized by Konenkov. There is evidence that the author kissed his creation, sending it to his historical homeland. Now the museum’s collection contains about 80 works by Sergey Timofeevich.
