Satori Three Inches within Your Heart

author

David Salle

description

Mediums: oil, acrylic, canvas.
Location: the Tate Modern Gallery, London (the UK).

Salle’s large-scale canvas consists of six panels, of which the top three have a much lower height than the bottom ones. Visually, the picture can be divided into two parts. The lower part depicts plots with naked female bodies painted in a gray-black palette and shadows; at the top, there is a large group of people depicted in contrasting blue and yellow tones and engaged in various activities. On top of the whole composition, the artist placed several vivid pictures that seem to hover over the rest of the image. One of these images is a sculpture by prominent Italian master Alberto Giacometti, and the insets in the lower paintings resemble Flemish painting. Their realism creates a sharp contrast with the eroticism of naked women.
