Relations in time

author

Marina Abramovic

description

In this performance, Abramovic and her partner Ulay checked their endurance. They sat with their backs to each other, tied their hair into one common knot and sat motionless for 16-17 hours every day during the exhibition. Immovable and silent sitting is tough work, and the tied position makes the pose of participants even more static. There is also a moment of interaction and competition in this performance because if one of the participants failed and gave up, he would let his partner down, and the performance would be unsuccessful. The act took place without public participation for 16 hours; when the participants were so tired that they were on the verge of fainting, spectators were allowed into the hall. At the sight of the audience, the forces again returned to Marina and Ulay, and they were able to withstand another hour of performance, fueled by the energy of the audience.
