description

Mediums: sheet metal, wire, rod, lead, paint.
Location: The Calder Foundation (New York, the USA).

Having visited Piet Mondrian’s studio in New York in the early 1930s, Calder was shocked by his abstract works and innovative approach to painting. This meeting was a turning point in the work of the sculptor, who forever moved away from realistic images and began to create meaningless compositions. In this work, you can notice the connection with the paintings of Mondrian, as well as the search for the perfect balance of shape, colour and size. This is one of the first dynamic sculptures of Calder, whose elements rotate from the blow of the wind. For stability, the composition is placed on thin legs-supports, which can be easily stuck in the ground.
