Portrait of Ilarie Voronca

author

Victor Brauner

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Museum of Fine Arts, Galati (Romania).

One of the earliest and few survived Dadaist creations of the Romanian artist depicts his friend and like-minded person, prominent poet and essayist Ilarie Voronca. Together they founded the avant-garde magazine “75HP” in Bucharest; probably, that is why the background around the model’s face made of geometric shapes resembles bookshelves with books and stationery. The painting containing Cubist elements is distinguished by bright colour combinations, which gives it a resemblance to a stained glass window or mosaic.
