Portrait of August Strindberg

author

Gösta Adrian-Nilsson

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art, Stockholm (Sweden).

This portrait of the founder of modern literature and theater in Sweden was painted shortly after his death. Even though the artist used, especially in the choice of colour, the methods of expressionism in combination with elements of cubist technology, the similarity with the original is quite accurate. In addition, Nilsson conveyed the character of the stern researcher of occultism and lover of psychotype observations. His interest in Strindberg’s personality was not accidental – his starting platform was, like for Gosta, naturalism; then he became interested in early expressionism.
