Piraeus landscape with a statue

author

Nikos Engonopoulos

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Macedonian Museum of Modern Art, Thessaloniki (Greece).

The artist depicted the port city near Athens, including this three-story narrow house several times. For example, in a later picture of 1944, the statue is dressed in a bathing suit with red and white stripes, the favourite colours of Nikos. The artist was attracted by the view overlooking the sea and distant mountains. However, in this picture, the house, the dam and the sky with “heavy” clouds characteristic of the master are depicted conditionally. The building that once served as a warehouse was restored by New York-based designer and architect C. Hubert and is now the Center for Contemporary Art.
