Pieta

author

Bernard Buffet

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: Pompidou Center of Contemporary Art, Paris.

The paintings of Buffet reflected the darkness of the times of post-war France. Traditionally, Pieta is the scene of the mourning of Jesus Christ by the Virgin Mary. In contrast to the famous paintings of Titian and Van Gogh on this subject, the work of Buffet goes beyond religion. Here we see an elderly woman mourning the death of her son.
