Returning after the end of the First World War to his homeland, the artist actively participated in the Flemish movement of Expressionists, using themes and techniques of this style. The pacified rustic atmosphere inspired the artist to create unusually plastic works soft and generally warm in colour. Peace reigns in the world under a jolly sky – one couple is feeling peaceful, especially a lying naked woman, who has got picnic tableware on her belly. The town indicated in the corner of the painting looks like a mysterious castle. Experts say that this manner is similar to that of Marc Chagall.
