One of the brightest paintings of the late art of the master is “Penitent”, which reflects all the drama and pain of his life. The aesthetics and colour palette of the picture are very gloomy. The fall of the fascist regime and the terrible consequences of the war left a deep imprint on Sironi’s soul and found expression in his work, which was already distinguished by pessimism and a gloomy vision. Immersed in almost complete darkness, the scene highlights the figure of the penitent, at whom other characters look with condemnation and hostility. Perhaps, the artist depicted himself as the central character, disappointed and condemned by society.
