description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Royal Museum of Fine Arts (Antwerp, Belgium).

The artist’s early painting is an original mixture of expressionism and symbolism and attracts with its shadowy atmosphere. Immersed in mysterious darkness, the building is surrounded by translucent ghost trees, and the figures of people resemble moths flying to electric light. Paul Delvaux’s fascination with architecture was reflected in the beautifully depicted facade of the building, with carefully painted window openings and stucco molding. The colour scheme of the picture is almost monochrome and has warm ocher hues characteristic of the early work of the painter.
