Old Mongol with a pipe

author

Mikhail Tsybasov

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia (Petrozavodsk, Russia).

The artist painted the portrait of a racy old Mongolian during his long business trip to Central Asia, where he participated in the creation of the film “His Name is Suhe-Bator”. The painting, made with very thin brushes according to the “principle of accomplishment”, is rightfully considered one of the most striking in the creative legacy of the author. Smoking a pipe, the man looks thoughtfully into the distance, his calm and slightly tired face symbolizes the wisdom of the eastern people. Tsybasov intentionally left his hands and the lower part of the canvas almost untouched, focusing on the old man’s face, depicted with amazing clarity and authenticity. The landscape in the background gives an idea of the nature of the region where this person lives.
