This is one of the main works by the artist, because the principles of his theories were brightly reflected in it. The pale gray background sets off the “rainbow” of multi-colored diagonal stripes. The uniquely generalized Suprematist trends interact with color painting and the search for “new spatial perceptions”. The interacting tones of the stripes and their direction upwards fill the composition with spatial sensation, making the planar image voluminous. The main color placed near the neutral one creates a second one, contrast, around itself; together they create a third one. Despite the simplicity of the plan, this work, like the works of Malevich and Rozanova’s “Green Strip”, formed the pinnacle of Russian avant-garde art.
