Masks

author

Павел Яковлевич Зальцман

description

Mediums: watercolor, paper.
Location: private collection.

The plot of the masks, which the artist repeated twice (the first watercolour was created in 1982) at the end of his life, can serve as the key to all creativity. People in his reality always wear masks and are like stone sculptures, frozen in motionless poses, even if the picture is called “Holiday”. Cities are depicted with empty eye-sockets and are called “Aliens”. Late Pavel Zaltsman is always a philosophical text with ambiguous meanings, difficult reflections on a person’s place “in the system” when conscience and dignity do not let them fit into it.
