Moon phases I

author

Paul Delvaux

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art (New York, the USA).

The first of three works with the same name consists of several storylines, which at first glance are not connected. In the foreground, we see a naked woman, wrapped as if she is a gift, and the ubiquitous Otto Lindenbrock, the hero of science fiction books by Jules Verne, whom the artist depicted in many of his canvases. This time, the professor appears in the company of another person dressed in a formal suit, which indicates the influence of Rene Magritte’s work. The character in the background, leading the naked girls, is a self-portrait of the artist.
