Memories of the journey

author

Gino Severini

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: private collection.

The work created in the technique of pointillism resembles a colourful applique or collage, in which the author’s impressions from a busy trip were mixed. The author depicted some attributes of the reality of his times; it is a vivid illustration demonstrating the lifestyle of pre-war Europe. Interesting is the image of the train, which rapidly rushes into the central part of the painting depicting a medieval square. This image symbolizing the beginning of a new era and the destruction of the old foundations appeared in works of Severini repeatedly and became the central theme of several of his paintings.
