1936
Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art Aalborg (Denmark).
Briefly about the painting:
The main part of the painting is filled with threatening clouds. In the center of it, a man of the size of a tin soldier stands on a narrow uneven strip of land. This is German Chancellor Adolf Hitler in his characteristic posture. It is he who represents Nazism. On the right side of the canvas is a young couple, depicted in a surrealistic manner. It is the symbol of love that must resist Nazism. Wilhelm Freddie uses a surrealistic idiom, in which, combined with realistic images, ominous distorted figures are reproduced. This and other anti-fascist paintings forced the artist to hide in Sweden until the end of the war.
