Marie Toyen (Maria Cerminova)

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Geraldine Galateau Collection, Paris (France).

This work of an early surrealistic period was exhibited at the first show of a surrealistic group in Prague in early 1935. In the catalog of this exhibition, Vitezslav Nezval, who developed the interpretation for individual pictures, wrote about this picture of a woman, “I admire the phrase that it was a “tower of love”, and we disdain the evil chewing gum of Americans.” The theorist of Czech Surrealism meant the extraordinary conciseness and clarity of the plot of Toyen. The artist used unusual vocabulary, emphasizing the importance and thoroughness of the feminine.
