description

Mediums: wood, varnish.
Location: private collection.

This oak sculpture is a part of the early Cubist period of the artist, dating back to 1913 – 1918. The composition as a whole hardly resembles a female figure, as it consists of several geometric volumetric and different-sized elements. The shoulders and hairstyle of the woman are most clearly identified. Until 2009, when the sculpture was sold at almost 30 million euros at Christie’s in Paris, the work remained little known. It was first owned by Fernand Leger and then was in the collection of designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Berger.
