description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: Tate Modern Gallery, London (the UK).

The painting depicts laborious work – washing and ironing of linen and things. Men’s shirts, recognizable by collars and cuffs, are one part of the picture; the other one “foams” with the lace of women’s blouses, aprons and other delicate items of the wardrobe. Despite the uniform blue and white colour, the background of the laundry on the “male” half is dark and contains many geometric shapes. They are more aggressive and oppress the female things occupying more space. Parts of large inscriptions allow you to read the word “work”, and it is the central theme of the plot.
