The plot is taken from the Old Testament. Judith was a Jewish woman who was considered a Jewish heroine. According to the legend, she killed Assyrian commander Holofernes, defending her city from the Assyrian army. The artist’s model for this picture was Adele Bloch-Bauer, a daughter of Moritz Bauer, the General Director of the Vienna Banking Union.
