Jeepney

author

Vicente Silva Manansala

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Ateneo Art Gallery, Quezon City (Philippines).

Jeepney is a special type of transport in the Philippines. It is a converted American military jeep, which is used as public transport. Having filled all the space of the painting with these machines, Manansala successfully conveyed the feeling of stuffiness, crowding, pollution and noise caused by excessive traffic on the streets of the capital. It seems that people have difficulty breathing. The numerous roofs of the jeepneys resemble the backs of fantastic creatures and are a clear echo of the past war. At the same time, these jeeps painted in bright, mostly yellow colours are unique works of provincial folk culture, which come in a strange contrast with the atmosphere of the modern metropolis.
