The Tate Gallery Britain, London, the UK.

Watercolour, ink, paper.

The artist depicted famous scientist Isaac Newton sitting on a stone and completely immersed in his scientific research. William Blake criticized modern science rejected Newton’s optical theory, considering it lifeless. The artist expressed his dislike not directly but hiding it behind various symbols and hints; that is fully consistent with the style he developed. The painting entered the cycle of twelve “Large colour prints” in which Blake ridiculed human flaws. In 1995, the engraving served as the basis for the creation of the bronze statue of Newton by Scottish sculptor Eduardo Paolozzi; it is installed in front of the British Library.
