author

Ernst Fuchs

description

Mediums: paper, pastel, tempera.
Location: The Ernst Fuchs Museum, Vienna (Austria).

The native of Vienna, the cradle of psychoanalysis, E. Fuchs represented the unconscious in his works as a painting of subjective worlds that are controlled by the rational human spirit. The painting of the late period created in contrasting colors depicts an old man listening to the cosmos and his own inner world. The tension of the character is expressed by the bright red color of his head, by the gesture of his hands pressed to his ears, and also by the thunderbolt. At the same time, the head is similar in shape to an antique vessel, as if it contained the whole experience of humanity. Thin luminous and sharpening lines extending to infinity indicate the connection with the cosmos.
