Immaculate Deception

author

Conroy Maddox

description

Mediums: mixed media and collage, board.
Location: The Redfern Gallery, London (the United Kingdom).

Briefly about the painting:

In the later period, while drawing and conveying “dreams, obsessive ideas and fears” in surrealistic collages, Maddox often chose classical ideas. Here we see Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, dressed in a men’s suit, a dilapidated column, a fragment of the “cyclopean” masonry of ancient structures. The threat, oddly enough, comes from a nun with a semi-naked breast – she is armed with a large Turkish scimitar. Coupled with the huge black and obviously predatory half-bird, half-man and the land without signs of life, the collage gives the viewer a disturbing foreboding.
