God’s ear. Self Portrait

author

Auseklis Baušķenieks

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: the National Art Museum, Riga (Latvia).

Briefly about the painting: The surreal self-portrait demonstrates the artist’s skill in conveying the similarities and at the same time the author’s deep philosophical thoughts. He always “heard” the world around him and tried to live according to God’s laws of good. Sitting comfortably in a huge, realistic, carefully depicted ear, like in a chair, the painter surrounded himself with various devices, emphasizing his role as an artisan. In the painting, with his inherent humor, Baus also included such quite ordinary objects as washed socks, and it is unlikely that they happened to be near the photos of people close to him.
