Frost in Louveciennes

author

Alfred Sisley

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow, Russia.

While other artists, such as Monet and Renoir, preferred to depict summer and sunny scenes, Sisley fancied winter and snow landscapes. From 1872 to early 1875, Sisley lived with his family in the village of Voisin-Louveciennes. During his stay there, the artist depicted a number of village scenes. He tried to capture the influence of the season, weather and time of day.

This picture shows the town on a frosty sunny day. The earth is covered with a thin layer of frost. Fresh air crackles from a light wind, and two people talk about everyday problems. The gray sky contrasts with the orange sunlight reflected on the walls of the houses.
