She painted this early double portrait to mark the celebration of her wedding with D. Rivera. Kahlo did not focus on his personality as an artist and tried to play the role of just the wife of a talented and famous husband to see how she fits him. Big Rivera holds a palette and brushes symbolizing his artistic skill. At the same time, little Frida dressed in a Mexican woman’s costume is, according to portrait tradition, on the left and plays a passive role, holding her husband’s hand. The positioning of the figures is exact: most of Kahlo’s career was seen only in the shadow of Rivera, gaining international recognition at a later age.
