Ai Weiwei

description

Mediums: steel and glass crystals on a wooden base.
Location: The Abu Dhabi Art Museum (United Arab Emirates).

The sculpture, which looks like a crystal chandelier turned upside down, symbolizes the broken hopes of the Chinese people for the creation of a communist government. The 7-meter column consists of many luminous spirals that go upward, dissolving into infinity; its shape resembles the famous project “Tatlin Tower”, which the Soviet architect was never able to bring to life. According to Ai Weiwei himself, a spiral tower means going nowhere and self-destruction.
