Express Train II

author

Gösta Adrian-Nilsson

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Mjellby Art Museum in Halmstad (Sweden).

The painting perfectly demonstrates the author’s ability, unique for that time, to combine the techniques of two famous art movements – French Cubism and Italian Futurism. Breaking through the night, the express train rushes brightly lit cars forward. The action is expressed by the diagonal composition and geometric elements that make up the dark space. Sharp triangles light falls from the windows at night, and the train itself is surrounded by flashes, like by the northern lights. Thanks to this, the Cubo-futuristic picture, despite the dark colours of the palette, looks festive.
