Electric Prisms

author

Sonia Delaunay

description

Center Pompidou, Paris (France).

Canvas, oil.

The work demonstrates Sonia’s great concentric circles at their best. The composition interpreted by the name as an ode to modernity refracts the lights and bustle of Saint-Michel Boulevard into almost complete abstraction. The entire urban landscape splits into colour rhapsody, except for two figures in the lower part of the canvas in the center of the picture. But even they remain poorly distinguishable in the amazing cycle of a bold palette. Orphism beautifully illustrated how to place the colours of the palette on the canvas to create not only the impression of radiance but also the energy of the living movement of light.
